1) Preliminary Preparation: The first step is to write (or find) a script you wish to use. Make sure there are no copyright restrictions. A script shouldn't exceed a showtime length of 30 minutes. You'll also need all the puppets and props your script requires. Drawbridge Theater offers the use of our backdrops while at the theater (see above) though you may certainly provide your own if you prefer. Even a sheet or piece of material can be used. You'll also need to know who's going to perform each vocal part for the recording session.
2) The Audio Recording: The vocal portion of the puppet shows can be done live, however we strongly recommend they be recorded - especially if children will be doing the vocal parts. It simply makes it easier for the audience to understand and enjoy. Recording also allows background music and sound effects to be added, giving a fuller (and often more humorous) experience. All vocal parts must be supplied by the participants, and the portioning out of these parts should be decided prior to the recording session. It's also advisable to rehearse the lines at home prior to the recording session. For recording we use a Fostex 8-track digital recorder.
3) Editing the Soundtrack: This step will be handled by Mr. Jeff. He'll take the best vocal deliveries of the various takes from the recording session, splice them together and add background music and sound effects. Please note, due to legal restrictions we can't use copy written music. Songs and background music can be supplied by the participants if they have legal access to it; if not the music can be created by the staff here at the theater at no additional cost. This step may take several weeks, depending on how much music has to be composed. Once the soundtrack is complete, an MP3 copy of it will be emailed to you for review. Your suggestions for further editing will be accepted, though only one time. Once a second version is completed, any further audio editing would be undertaken by the participants.
COST for Steps 2 & 3: $100.00
4) The Video Recording: Once the soundtrack is settled on, and practice at home has brought your show up to the point where it's ready to be filmed, a time and day is scheduled for a video recording here at the theater. You'll be performing your show on our theater stage. Adults should be in attendance to handle the lighting. Mr. Jeff will be operating the camcorder. One prior rehearsal at the theater is an option if you feel it necessary. One session will complete all the filming.
5) Editing the Video: This step is handled by Mr. Jeff as well. He'll edit the best video takes together; and add titles and credits. The previously completed soundtrack will be dubbed onto the video for the clearest sound. Once completed, an MP4 copy of the puppet show will be sent to you. This MP4 can be loaded onto your computer and used to make DVD copies for yourself, family and friends.
COST for Steps 4 & 5: $100.00
6) Theater Performance: The final step (if chosen) is to invite friends and family here to the theater to view a live performance of your puppet show creation. You again will be able to use the theater stage, complete with lighting effects, shadow screens, changing backdrops, and sound system - even a Willy the Wizard introduction if you like! Don't forget at the conclusion of your show to come out and take a bow.
COST for Step 6: Theater rental for 1 hour - $50.00
Theater rental for 2 hours - $100.00
